John Higgins was born in Bloomington, Illinois, and spent his formative years in St. Louis, Missouri, where he attended Parkway Central High School. After completing his secondary education, Higgins pursued higher learning at Michigan State University, graduating in 1966. Following his academic pursuits, he enlisted in the Army and served in Korea and Georgia from 1967 until 1970.
As a talented actor, Higgins has made a name for himself in both television and Broadway productions. His extensive credits include appearances in popular TV shows such as "Silver Spoons" andBest " Of The West", as well as notable Broadway roles in "Shenandoah", "Oklahoma!", and "City Of Angels". Furthermore, Higgins has also ventured into songwriting, penning numerous musicals, over 100 commercial jingles, and theme songs.
One of Higgins' most notable achievements is the creation of "The Fields Of Ambrosia", a musical in which he wrote the book and lyrics and starred in. The production premiered at the George Street Playhouse in 1993 and was later reprised at the Aldwych Theatre on London's West End in 1996.
In addition to his work on "The Fields Of Ambrosia", Higgins co-wrote and directed "Johnny Guitar, The Musical", which opened at the Century Center For The Performing Arts in New York. The production garnered numerous awards and nominations, including the Outer Critics' Circle Award as Best Off-Broadway Musical in 2004. Since its premiere, "Johnny Guitar, The Musical" has been produced over 30 times across the country.
Throughout his illustrious career, Higgins has also had the opportunity to participate in various regional and stock productions. Some of his notable roles include appearances in "Grease", "Brigadoon", "Showboat", "Kiss Me Kate", "Guys & Dolls", "The Music Man", and "Side by Side With Sondheim".
