Johan Renck is a highly acclaimed and in-demand director, boasting a reputation that earned him the title of "the number one director of commercials and music videos in the world" by the French magazine CB News.
His directing career began in 1992 when he joined Mekano Film and Television in Stockholm, Sweden, before leaving in 1994 to form Renck Åkerlund Films with childhood friend Jonas Åkerlund. During this time, he also pursued a music career with his project Stakka Bo, achieving significant success.
By 1997, Renck dedicated himself to directing full-time, quickly gaining international recognition and working with prominent clients such as Madonna and Nike. His impressive roster of clients includes Nike, Levi's, Mercedes, Dom Perignon, H&M, and many artists like Kylie Minogue, New Order, The Libertines, and The Streets.
Throughout his career, Renck has received numerous prestigious nominations and awards, including MTV award nominations for his music videos for Madonna and Beyoncé, and two Cannes Bronze Lions for the Nike commercial "Racing Marion". He has also won awards for best video in MVPA and has been nominated in several categories in CAD for his music video for The Streets.
In addition to his commercial work, Renck has also won awards for his campaigns for Sagem and Karl Lagerfeld for H&M, and has been recognized in The Gunn Report as the 25th most rewarded director of commercials. His short film "Cow" for SOS Live Earth was nominated in Eurobest and Epica Awards, where it won the Bronze price.
Renck's work extends beyond commercials and music videos, as he has also directed films, theatre productions, art and music projects, and still photography for publications like Italian Vogue and brands such as Diesel. His feature film Downloading Nancy (2008) premiered at the Sundance Festival, where it competed in the Dramatic Competition.
