John Bloom, a Londoner born on September 12th, 1935, was the younger brother of the renowned actress Claire Bloom. His fascination with the film industry began at Pinewood studios, where he started as a script reader in the story department. However, his passion soon shifted towards film editing, and he started his career as an assistant to John Trumper on the 1958 film "Heart of a Child".
Bloom's big break came with the 1961 film "The Impersonator", where he earned his first solo credit as an editor. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he worked on numerous British films, solidifying his reputation as a skilled editor. His outstanding work on "Gandhi" (1982) earned him an Academy Award.
Since the mid-1980s, Bloom has primarily worked in America, collaborating with renowned directors like Mike Nichols. His notable projects include the cinema films "Closer" (2004),"Charlie Wilson's War" (2007),and "Wit" (2001). For the latter, he received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Single Camera Picture Editing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special.
