John has had an illustrious 40-year career as a multifaceted professional, working as an actor, director, and writer across various mediums, including theatre, radio, film, and television. Throughout his extensive career, he has performed in and directed over 100 stage productions, as well as appeared in and narrated numerous television series, documentaries, and films.
Notably, John has appeared in a range of films, including Pictures, The Sinking Of The Rainbow Warrior, Treasure Island Kids, Fly, The Man Who Lost His Head, and Love Birds. His impressive acting credits also include being awarded Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor by Wellington theatre critics, as well as Best Actor in a Short Film.
John has demonstrated his versatility as an actor and director, taking on a wide range of roles, from the absurd to the classical. His extensive experience has allowed him to portray iconic characters, such as Shylock and Polonius, and he has recently relished the opportunity to play the dwarf Oin in the core cast of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit.
In addition to his on-screen work, John has also made a significant impact in the world of voiceover, narrating almost 150 documentaries for prominent networks such as National Geographic, Discovery, and Animal Planet. His voiceover work has also been featured in numerous local and international productions and broadcasts.
John's impressive directing credits include Shortland Street, Comedy Central, Epitaph, Jackson's Wharf, The Tribe, Taonga, and The Kiwi Who Saved Britain. He has also directed over 50 television commercials and corporate A/Vs, showcasing his adaptability and skill behind the camera.
In addition to his work in the entertainment industry, John has also had the opportunity to share his expertise as a lecturer at various institutions, including the NZ Drama School - Toi Whakaari, Unitec's School of Performing and Screen Arts, and the University of Auckland.
Throughout his busy career, John has also made himself available for commercial and corporate voice work, as well as reading Talking Books for the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind.
