Prior to his life in music, Gary had a fascinating past as a salvage diver, and later, he honed his skills as a radio singer in the vibrant city of New Orleans. His impressive talents also took him to various nightclubs, where he captivated audiences with his captivating performances.
Throughout his illustrious career, Gary has made numerous records, showcasing his remarkable range and versatility as a composer and singer. His impressive repertoire includes a plethora of compositions, among which are "Life of My Life", "Forget It", "Where Did You Go Last Night?", and "Possom Song", which he skillfully crafted as a member of the esteemed ASCAP.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of music, John Gary was honored with a prestigious award in June 1991, presented by the American Foundation for the Performing Arts and M. Edward Bass at a star-studded event, aptly titled "A Tribute to John Gary", which was held to benefit the John Gary Recovery Fund for Cancer Treatments. The event, produced by Bass and Karen Sharpe-Kramer, was a resounding success, with the incomparable Liza Minnelli taking center stage to pay tribute to the legendary John Gary.
