Biography

John Joseph Pershing, a distinguished and celebrated American general, made his grand entrance into the world on September 13, 1860, in the picturesque state of Missouri. As the years went by, Pershing's remarkable journey would eventually come to a close on July 15, 1948, at the esteemed Walter Reed Hospital in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. This extraordinary individual had the unique distinction of being one of only two American generals to have ever held the prestigious rank of General of the Armies, alongside the legendary George Washington.

John Pershing, a decorated military leader, rose through the ranks to achieve the esteemed position of major general, as the United States officially declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917. Following the country's entry into the global conflict, Pershing received a surprise telegram from his esteemed father-in-law, Senator Warren, inquiring about his proficiency in the French language. With a confident tone, John replied that he possessed a fluency in the language, which would later prove to be a valuable asset in his military endeavors.

A few days subsequent to this exchange, Senator Warren penned a letter to Pershing, revealing that he had been consulted by Secretary of War Newton D. Baker regarding the selection of a general to lead the American forces in France. This news was soon followed by a summons from Major General Hugh L. Scott, requesting Pershing's presence in Washington, D.C. It was during this meeting that Pershing learned of his nomination to command the American Expeditionary Forces, a prestigious position that would require his exceptional leadership skills and linguistic abilities.

Following the cessation of hostilities, General John J. Pershing devoted himself to a comprehensive overhaul of the United States Army, driven by his unwavering commitment to modernizing and strengthening the military organization. As a testament to his exceptional leadership and dedication, the United States Congress bestowed upon him the esteemed title of General of the Armies of the United States in the year 1919. This honor not only recognized his remarkable achievements during the Great War but also elevated him to the highest rank ever attained by any officer in the history of the United States Army.

In recognition of his distinguished service and enduring legacy, the United States Army took the momentous decision to name a formidable tank, the M26 Pershing, after this esteemed individual.
