Biography

John Macneill's journey in the world of theatre began with a three-year acting course at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, where he honed his skills before graduating and making his mark on the stage.

Following his graduation, John joined Bedside Manners, a small-scale musical tour of community venues in London, where he played Bob Cratchet in A Christmas Carol. This marked the beginning of a long-term association with the company, during which he acted, wrote, and directed numerous productions, touring to various venues across the UK, including The West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Barbican Centre, and The Lyric Hammersmith.

John's impressive resume includes appearances in West End productions such as Buddy and She Loves Me, as well as roles in West Side Story at the National Theatre of Kenya and various other theatre productions throughout the UK.

In 2002, John took on the role of admin and marketing co-ordinator for Kneehigh, before becoming co-director of Mundic Nation. He played the role of Jack in Hell Fire Corner, a production co-produced with Hall for Cornwall, and also appeared in Barabas (Marlowe's Jew of Malta) as Pilia Borza and in Never Say Rabbit in a Boat by Nick Darke as Helyar Jan.

John's extensive television credits include Black Books, The Bill, Doc Martin, His Dark Materials, Beyond Paradise, and The Diplomat, as well as numerous commercials. He is perhaps most well-known for his portrayal of Jacka Hoblyn in Poldark Series 2, 4, and 5.

In addition to his work on stage and screen, John has worked closely with students at AMATA, guiding them in performance and acting for camera since 2015. His productions, including The House of Bernarda Alba (2016) and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (2017),have received critical acclaim, with the cast of Ui winning Best Ensemble Company at the AMATA festival.

John's impressive career is a testament to his dedication and passion for the performing arts, and he continues to make a significant impact on the world of theatre and television.
