Johnny Yong Bosch, born John Jay Bosch, hails from Kansas City, Missouri, and spent his formative years in Garland, Texas. His fascination with martial arts began after being inspired by the works of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, which led him to participate in several competitions and emerge victorious.
Bosch's early career took off when he joined the cast of the popular TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993) in its second season, replacing Walter Jones, who had originated the role of Adam Park in season 1. He reprised this role in the franchise's films and subsequent seasons, including Power Rangers Zeo (1996) and Power Rangers Turbo (1997).
However, it was his voice acting career that truly catapulted him to fame. Bosch landed the role of Kaneda in a redub of Akira (1988) produced by Pioneer in 2001, succeeding Cam Clarke, who had previously voiced the character in the 1988 Streamline dub. This breakthrough role paved the way for further opportunities in anime series and games, including Vash the Stampede in Trigun (1998),Renton Thurston in Eureka Seven (2005),Genma Shiranui and Sasori in the Naruto franchise, Yu Narukami in Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (2008),and, most notably, Ichigo Kurosaki in the Bleach franchise.
In recent years, Bosch has continued to take on a variety of roles, including Sabo in One Piece (1999) from 2020 onward, Toji Suzuhara in Netflix's 2019 redub of Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995),and Ryogi in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (2017),among many others.
