His parents, a woodcutter and charcoal producer, and a "buissonnière" - a term referring to a woman who gathers and sells firewood and other forest products - respectively, played a significant role in shaping his early life. The young Joseph spent his formative years in a humble abode known as the Borie, nestled 30 kilometers south of the ancient walled city of Carcassonne, which would later influence his literary works.
Delteil's formative years were spent in a picturesque vineyard plot nestled in the charming village of Pieusse, which he affectionately referred to as his "native village". He resided there until he completed his primary education in 1907, marking the culmination of his early academic endeavors. his Following primary education, Delteil proceeded to attend school in the historic town of Limoux, where he further honed his intellectual skills. Subsequently, he enrolled in the prestigious Collège Saint-Stanislas in Carcassonne, a renowned institution that provided him with a solid foundation for his future pursuits.
In the year 1922, the literary career of Delteil commenced with the publication of his inaugural novel, Sur le fleuve Amour, a work that successfully garnered the notice of prominent figures within the French literary circle, including the renowned writers Louis Aragon and André Breton.
Following this initial success, Delteil went on to collaborate with the influential literary magazine Literature, thereby further solidifying his position within the literary community.
Jean Delteil's notable literary endeavour, "Jeanne d'Arc", initially published in the year 1925, garnered the esteemed Prix Femina accolade, yet concurrently, it sparked a maelstrom of controversy and rejection from the Surrealist circle, with the prominent figure André Breton being amongst those who categorically dismissed it as a "vast and egregious aberration".
This professional divergence from the Surrealist movement was subsequently solidified when Delteil received a formal letter of rupture from Breton, effectively severing his ties with the group.
In the midst of the 1930s, Delteil's life took a drastic turn as he succumbed to a serious illness, prompting him to bid farewell to the vibrant Parisian scene and embark on a new chapter in the sun-kissed south of France. It was here, in the picturesque Tuilerie de Massane, nestled near the charming city of Montpellier, that Delteil would spend the remainder of his days in a life that blended the rustic simplicity of a peasant with the creative passion of a writer.
Throughout his time in the south, Delteil was joined by his loving wife, Caroline Dudley, a talented individual in her own right who had played a pivotal role in the creation of the influential Revue nègre. Together, the couple would continue to cultivate their artistic pursuits, surrounded by the serenity and natural beauty of their adopted home. And so, Delteil's life would come full circle, as he spent his final days in the company of his wife, the land, and the creative spirit that had always driven him.
Delteil's sojourn in the picturesque south of France was marked by the cultivation of enduring bonds with a diverse array of literary luminaries, including writers, poets, singers, painters, and actors.
The renowned French artist, Jean-Pierre Delteil, has been laid to rest in the Pieusse cemetery, where he shares a final resting place with his beloved wife, Caroline.
