Juan Carlos is a multifaceted artist who has made a name for himself in the entertainment industry across Canada, the United States, Latin America, and Europe. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from the University of Windsor, he has excelled in various roles, including actor, writer, director, and producer.
As a playwright, Juan Carlos has penned several notable works, including "Further Beyond," which premiered at the SummerWorks festival in 2000, and "Borderlines," a one-man show co-written with his father Alfonso Velis Tobar, which debuted at the Playwright's Theatre Centre in Vancouver.
Throughout his career, Juan Carlos has had the privilege of working alongside esteemed actors such as Matt Damon, Nicolas Cage, Colm Feore, Barry Pepper, Ed Asner, Eric McCormack, David Thewlis, Paul Sorvino, Christopher Plummer, Melissa Leo, Cynthia Nixon, Anna Paquin, Brooke Shields, Betsy Brant, Carla Gugino, Laura Osma, and Rosie Perez. He has also had the opportunity to collaborate with acclaimed directors Alexander Payne, Atom Egoyan, Don McKellar, Jay Russell, Alfonso Quijada, Bruce Beresford, and Mimi Leder.
Between 2000 and 2005, Juan Carlos served as the Artistic Director of Acropolis Theatre Company, overseeing five seasons and producing the annual Shakespeare on the Thames Theatre Festival in London. He is currently in post-production for the limited mini-series "Drive," which he co-created with Gary Brennan, and has a new play titled "Howling Winds" set to premiere this fall in the Niagara region, where he resides with his family.
As a director and writer, Juan Carlos has worked on various projects, including "Hereafter," "Desire," "Giving Grace," "Whore," and "The Migrant Fields." His production company, Izalco Films Inc., is currently developing several scripts.
