Julia Sweeney, born on October 10, 1959, in Spokane, Washington, is a talented actress and comedienne. She is best known for her androgynous character Pat, which she portrayed on Saturday Night Live (SNL) from 1990 to 1994.
Julia was the oldest of five children born to an Irish-Catholic federal prosecutor. She demonstrated an early talent for mimicry but initially downplayed her interest in performing. After college, she worked as an accountant for Columbia Studios in Los Angeles for five years before pursuing a career in show business.
Julia started taking classes at the Groundlings Theater, where she honed her skills in improv, character development, and sketch-writing. She eventually joined SNL as a featured player in 1990 and became a regular cast member the following season. Her character Pat became a fan favorite, and she also appeared in several TV shows and films during her time on the show.
After leaving SNL in 1994, Julia co-wrote and starred in the feature film It's Pat: The Movie, which did not receive great reviews. She then turned her attention to writing and performing stand-up comedy, which led to the creation of her one-woman stage show "God Said, Ha!" The show debuted in San Francisco in 1995 and was later performed on Broadway.
Julia has continued to work in television and film, appearing in shows such as "Hope and Gloria," "3rd Rock from the Sun," "George & Leo," and "Suddenly Susan." She has also written and directed several stage shows, including "In the Family Way" and "Letting Go of God."
