Biography

Kevin Johnson's 12-year tenure with the Phoenix Suns, which spanned from 1987 to 1998, with a mid-season trade from Cleveland during his rookie season, solidifies his position as one of the top five greatest point guards in NBA history.

As a penetrator, Johnson was unmatched in his speed, agility, and fearlessness, often leaving defenders in his wake as he navigated the court with ease. His ability to score and pass with equal proficiency is a rare trait, as evidenced by his sixth-ranked career assists per game average and his status as one of only five players to average over 20 points and 10 assists per game in three separate seasons.

Standing at just 6'1", Johnson's size was often an advantage, as he used his quickness and agility to attack the basket and challenge larger opponents. He was an electric, explosive, and inspirational floor leader who spearheaded a renaissance of the Phoenix Suns franchise and the Arizona sports scene as a whole.

Johnson's most iconic play is arguably his one-handed, baseline, tomahawk dunk over Hakeem Olajuwon during the 1994 playoffs, a feat that showcased his athleticism and dominance. Alongside Charles Barkley, Johnson led the Suns to the 1993 NBA Finals, where they faced off against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

Born in 1966, Johnson grew up in Sacramento, California, and attended the University of California, Berkeley in the 1980s. Beyond his on-court accomplishments, Johnson is renowned for his charity work and dedication to helping at-risk youth find purpose and meaning in their lives. He is a member of the Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame, a testament to his commitment to giving back to his community.
