Kevin L. Johnson is a talented actor, renowned for his versatile performances across television and film. He is most notably recognized for his recurring role as 'Sam Dermody' in the critically acclaimed Netflix series "Ozark", starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Initially, Johnson was cast for a two-episode appearance in the first season, but his portrayal of 'Sam' proved so compelling that he went on to reprise the role in subsequent seasons, including the fourth and final installment.
Johnson's upcoming projects include the Netflix series "Florida Man", executive produced by Bateman, and a guest appearance in the cult favorite "Stranger Things".
Before embarking on his acting career, Johnson discovered his passion for acting while attending Clemson University. As an English major, he was required to see "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", which had a profound impact on him. He promptly signed up for acting classes the following semester, marking the beginning of his formal training. Although he didn't land a role in his first audition, Johnson's involvement with the tech crew helped him develop a deeper understanding of production.
Johnson's early theatre credits include the lead role of 'Sam', the pickle maker seeking love in "Crossing Delancey" at Clemson Little Theatre, as well as 'Oswald' in a Shakespeare in the Park production of "King Lear". Additional notable performances include the lead role of 'Willy Wonka' in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" at Easley Foothills Playhouse, 'Bardolph' in "Henry V" at Brooks Theater at Clemson University, and 'Wally' in "1940's Radio Hour" at Clemson Little Theatre.
During his time at Clemson, Johnson also discovered his singing voice while auditioning for roles. Although his mother was a country singer, he had never tested his own voice until he listened to a cast recording of "Urinetown" from the library to prepare for an audition.
Johnson graduated from Clemson University with a degree in English and a minor in advertising before securing an agent. He subsequently landed roles in commercials, including the North Carolina State Lottery and Burger King, as well as numerous short films. His first television role was on the hit series "One Tree Hill", which he almost didn't attend.
