Larry Sugar has enjoyed a successful 35-year career in the motion picture business, specializing in international licensing, marketing, and distribution of feature films for major studios like Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Lorimar, CBS, and Republic Pictures.
He received his law degree from USC School of Law in 1971 and began his career at Warner Bros., where he oversaw international licensing and joint venture agreements.
In 1974, Sugar moved to 20th Century-Fox, where he split his time between Business Affairs, International, and Production, overseeing the development and production of several feature films and their international licensing and distribution.
He then founded a successful independent distribution agency, Serendipity, which represented major studio releases, and later became President of Lorimar International, responsible for the placement of all Lorimar feature films worldwide.
From Lorimar, Sugar moved to CBS Productions, where he was Vice President of Distribution and Acquisition, overseeing the placement of all features in all media and supervising CBS Broadcast International.
He then gained experience as Executive Vice President of Weintraub Entertainment Group, negotiating licenses in all media worldwide for the Thorn-EMI 2000-title film library.
In 1989, Sugar became President of Republic Pictures International, responsible for the distribution of all feature films worldwide and supervision of co-productions and acquisitions.
Since 1993, Sugar has been producing and writing, producing seven family films for Showtime, including "Robin of Locksley," and producing and directing several television series, including "Dead Man's Gun," "First Wave," and "Just Deal."
More recently, he produced and directed 22 episodes of the television cooking series "Barely Cooking" and completed three seasons of the one-hour dramatic series "The Collector."
Sugar has been an adjunct professor at the College of Santa Fe and has lectured at various colleges and universities, including Brandeis, USC, UCLA, Tulane, and UBC.
He has acted as consultant for various organizations, including Showbiz Expo, AFMA, and NATPE, and has served as a consultant and/or board member for several production and distribution companies.
Larry Sugar is a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Screen Actors Guild, the Writer's Guild of Canada, the Director's Guild of Canada, the British Columbia Motion Picture Association, and various other associations.
He is also a founder and Chairman of the Board of D-Cinema Entertainment Inc. and resides in Vancouver, Canada.
