Biography

Marco Martins, a Portuguese film director of considerable talent and repute, came into the world in the year 1972, specifically in the vibrant city of Lisbon, Portugal. Following his formative years, Martins pursued a higher education at the esteemed Lisbon Theatre and Film School (Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema),where he successfully completed his studies in 1994.

Thereafter, he embarked on an apprenticeship with a trio of celebrated directors, each renowned for their unique cinematic styles and contributions to the world of filmmaking. These mentors, Wim Wenders, Manoel de Oliveira, and Bertrand Tavernier, provided Martins with invaluable guidance and expertise, allowing him to hone his craft and develop his own distinct directorial voice.

Under the watchful eyes of these industry stalwarts, Martins refined his skills, learning the intricacies of storytelling, visual composition, and the art of bringing a narrative to life on the big screen. This apprenticeship proved to be a pivotal juncture in his career, laying the foundation for his future success as a film director.

Martins, after successfully completing his apprenticeship, embarked on a two-year tenure as an assistant director to the renowned Portuguese filmmaker João Canijo. It was during this period that he began to make a name for himself through his captivating short films, including "Mergulho no Ano Novo" and "No Caminho Para a Escola". The former, a critically acclaimed short film, earned Martins widespread recognition after taking home the coveted Best Short Film Award at the prestigious International Short Films Festival of Vila do Conde.

Martins embarked on a creative journey in the late 1990s, transitioning from a promising career in filmmaking to the world of advertising, where he honed his skills as a talented director of commercials.

As his expertise and reputation continued to grow, Martins seized the opportunity to establish his own production company, "Ministério dos Filmes", in the year 2002.

Martins' inaugural cinematic endeavour, a feature film titled Alice, made its debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in the year 2005, garnering widespread critical acclaim and numerous international accolades, including several prestigious awards. Notably, the film was also included on the long list for the esteemed Academy Awards Foreign Language Film prize, a testament to its exceptional quality and artistic merit.

Martins' short film, a cinematic masterpiece, found itself in the esteemed company of other talented filmmakers when it was selected as a contender at the prestigious "Corto Cortissimo" competition, held during the 63rd Venice International Film Festival, a renowned event that showcases the best of 35mm short films from around the world, attracting a diverse array of international audiences and industry professionals alike.

Martins' cinematic endeavors continued to flourish in 2009, as he successfully brought his second film, a thought-provoking and visually stunning masterpiece titled "How to Draw a Perfect Circle", to the big screen.

Fast-forward to 2016, Martins once again showcased his remarkable directorial prowess, helming the critically acclaimed film "São Jorge", a testament to his growing reputation as a master of his craft.
