Margit Markus, later referred to as Margo or Margot, was born to a Jewish family with a complex parental dynamic. Her mother, Erika Scharfstein, was a renowned Austrian-British international contract bridge player, professionally known as Rixi Markus, and her father, Salomon Markus, was a skilled shoe-maker from Austria. The couple's tumultuous marriage ultimately ended in divorce following a lengthy and arduous legal battle.
Margit went on to marry Frederick Meeker, an American academic, with whom she shared a loving and harmonious union until her untimely passing in Los Angeles, California, in 1976, due to cancer. The couple remained childless throughout their marriage. Tragically, Margit predeceased both her mother and her husband by a significant margin.
