Matthew Amroliwala is a renowned British television newsreader, holding the esteemed position of chief presenter on the BBC News Channel. His impressive career has spanned decades, with a notable stint as an occasional relief presenter of the BBC News at One on BBC One. He also had the distinction of presenting Crimewatch alongside Kirsty Young from January 2008 until March 2015.
Prior to his illustrious broadcasting career, Amroliwala worked as a chartered accountant. In 1990, he made the transition to the BBC, becoming a BBC network television correspondent. This marked the beginning of his long and distinguished tenure with the BBC.
In 1997, Amroliwala joined the BBC News Channel as a presenter of the channel's evening programmes. He subsequently presented the late afternoon news programme, initially alongside Jane Hill and later with Maxine Mawhinney. In April 2006, he was reunited with Hill on the 11 am–2 pm shift, a partnership that continued until March 2013, when they moved to the 2 pm–5 pm slot on Tuesday to Friday. Emily Maitlis co-presented on Mondays.
Throughout his career, Amroliwala has covered numerous major news stories, including extensive reporting from Northern Ireland. He has also reported from Bosnia, covering the fall of Srebrenica and traveling throughout the Balkans during the conflict in Bosnia. From 2008 to 2015, he co-presented the programme Crimewatch with Kirsty Young and Rav Wilding (later Martin Bayfield),focusing on solved cases.
Since 8 September 2014, Amroliwala has presented the flagship programme Global on BBC World News, the BBC's international news channel. He made his debut on BBC Four on 27 June 2016, presenting the first edition of World News Today. In February 2023, it was announced that Amroliwala would become a chief presenter on the BBC's new news channel, catering to both UK and international audiences, which is set to launch in April 2023.
