Biography

Matthew Mishory is a filmmaker known for his exceptional visual style and expansive narrative language, earning him recognition as a "rising talent" by Variety. He effortlessly navigates the boundaries between documentary and fiction, crafting stories about outsiders and visionaries who have revolutionized our understanding of art, history, and the natural world.

Matthew is currently in post-production on his feature film Mosolov's Suitcase, starring Lior Ashkenazi. His documentary feature Fioretta premiered at the 2023 Zurich and Woodstock Film Festivals, winning three prizes at DocLA before receiving a theatrical release. In 2022, he shot the feature documentary Who Are the Marcuses?, featuring Warren Buffett, for Stone Canyon Entertainment and Rhino Films. The film premiered at the Newport Beach and Santa Barbara International Film Festivals to critical acclaim and was screened at the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

As a commercial director, Matthew has worked with prominent brands, including TCL, shooting the national "Powerful Performance" campaign starring NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, which was featured on the 2019 Super Bowl broadcast. He has also collaborated with Antetokounmpo on the 2021 "Enjoy More" campaign. Matthew has directed campaigns for Turkish Airlines, Pfizer, Roku, and Icelandic Glacial, among other brands.

Matthew's filmography includes the 2018 film No Place of Exile, a documentary about the modernist composer and pianist Artur Schnabel, which premiered on the Arte network. The film was shot in Switzerland, Italy, Vienna, and Berlin, utilizing unconventional textures and celebrated German actor Udo Samel to explore Schnabel's journey through the emotional and physical landscapes of the 20th century.

His 2015 documentary Absent was filmed in rural Moldova and was designated a "must-see" film by Cineuropa. Cine Maldito named Absent one of the top ten films of the year.

Matthew's feature film debut, the 35mm Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait of James Dean, was released theatrically in the United States, the UK, and Germany. The San Francisco Chronicle praised Joshua Tree as "mesmerizing and sexy," while Artforum deemed it "a nuanced portrayal of an entire era."

Previously, Matthew's short film Delphinium, about artist Derek Jarman, was installed in the British Film Institute's National Film Archive. The film was re-released in the UK by the BFI as part of the year-long Jarman2014 celebration and was presented by the Tate Britain Museum in London in 2017.
