Matthew Morrison's journey to becoming an actor began with a summer of acting in a children's theater group, which sparked his passion for the craft. He then attended Orange County High School of the Arts, followed by the prestigious NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, although he didn't enjoy his college experience.
Despite a regulation stating that students couldn't audition in the first two years at NYU, Morrison managed to get himself an agent and dropped out of the university to pursue his dreams. His musical debut was in the 1984 production of Footloose, which was followed by his role in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Morrison's big break came when he landed the part of Link Larkin in the musical Hairspray, which led to his debut in the television and film world with small roles in Sex and the City, Hack, Encino Man, and other projects. He has stated that his favorite role in television was in the 2005 musical Once Upon a Mattress, which starred Carol Burnett.
Morrison was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in The Light in the Piazza and went on to leave the show in late 2005. He continued to work in television, film, and theater, taking on various roles and projects.
In 2008, Morrison starred in the Lincoln Center production of South Pacific as Lieutenant Cable, and he later took on the role of Will Schuester in the upcoming Fox series Glee, which premiered in the fall of 2009.
