Matthieu Charneau, a French actor born in Chateauroux, embarked on a remarkable journey after moving to Paris to attend the prestigious Cours Florent, a renowned acting school. This marked the beginning of a string of successful short films, including Coup de Grace, directed by Justin Wu, which was selected at the International Film Festival of San Jose.
This early success granted Matthieu the opportunity to collaborate with prominent artists such as Frank Ocean, Pierre and Gilles, Ricardo Gomes, Laurent Humbert, and many others. He was featured in various editorials for notable publications like V Magazine, Out Magazine, i-D, Citizen K, Yearbook, and Les Inrockuptibles, swiftly gaining recognition.
Upon graduating from acting school, Matthieu joined the cast of Kurt Sutter's FX Series The Bastard Executioner, alongside Lee Jones, Stephen Moyer, and Katey Sagal, in 2015. The following year, he appeared in Les Nouvelles Folies Francaises, directed by Thomas Blanchard.
In 2017, Portuguese Director Carlos Conceicao's feature film Bad Bunny, starring Matthieu Charneau in a leading role, premiered at the 70th Cannes Film Festival and was selected for the 40th Clermont Ferrand International Short Film Festival in 2018, as well as the 48th New Directors/New Films at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and The MoMA in New York.
Matthieu then worked with British-Nigerian director Joseph a. Adesunloye on his second feature film Faces, a multi-narrative film set in London, which won the Best LGBTQ Feature Film Award at the International Durban Film Festival in 2018. He played the leading role of Gaspard alongside international stars Terry Pheto and Shingai Shoniwa.
In recent years, Matthieu has continued to thrive in the film industry, reuniting with Portuguese Director Carlos Conceicao on his new feature film Um Fio De Baba Escarlate / Name Above Title, set in Portugal and centered around the exploits of an infamous serial killer, played by Charneau himself.
Additionally, Matthieu has been exploring his passion for filmmaking by shooting and directing short films on cellphones, using the raw aspect to tell stories that blend fiction and nonfiction. His first music video, featuring American singer artist Vylet, is set to premiere at the end of 2019.
