May Charters was born in Toronto, Canada, and her early life was filled with the excitement of the film industry. As a child, she would often accompany her parents, cinematographer Rodney Charters and artist Gillian Adamson, to film sets, where she learned about cameras and storytelling from her father. This exposure sparked her passion for acting, and she began her career at the tender age of 9, playing an orphan in the Canadian/BBC TV movie Heaven On Earth.
As she grew older, May continued to pursue her acting dreams, taking classes at the Leah Posluns Theater and later studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA),where she completed a master's course at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). She also honed her skills in directing at the New York Film Academy and the Paris American Academy for painting.
In addition to her acting career, May is a talented dancer, and she began dancing Flamenco professionally with the acclaimed companies Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company and Ritmo Flamenco. She has continued to study and perform flamenco in Canada, the US, and Spain.
May's breakthrough in the indie world came with her thought-provoking portrayal of Alison in the Canadian Award-Winning film Lovers in a Dangerous Time, which she co-wrote and co-directed. The film toured the world, winning several best feature awards and earning nominations for her directing and acting. During this time, she was in a holding pattern with a Green Card, which limited her ability to pursue acting full-time.
However, her artistic talents soon took her on a new path. While painting portraits for an art show in Los Angeles, May met renowned photographer Bruce Weber, who hired her as one of his top scouts and casting directors for his campaigns. This role took her around the world and kept her busy full-time.
Now, May has the freedom to work in various parts of the world, thanks to her British, Canadian, and American citizenship. She has produced and directed several short films, winning awards at festivals worldwide, and is currently pursuing her love of voiceover work in video games, narration, and commercials.
When she's not busy in film, TV, and voiceover, May explores her other creative passions. She has completed the illustrations for a children's book, Lo Lo Sausage, due to be released in 2019, and is working on an art charity exhibit to raise awareness about the epidemic of missing native girls in Canada and the US. She is also an avid dancer and writer, with screenplays in various stages of production.
May splits her time between Los Angeles, Toronto, London, New York, Spain, and Sweden, allowing her to stay connected to her diverse creative interests and pursue her artistic passions around the world.
