Following the war, Barrington decided to take the stage, enrolling in the Birmingham School of Drama to hone his craft. He then went on to perform in various repertory theatres and even made an appearance at the prestigious Vaudeville Theatre in the production of Salad Days.
In addition to his notable role as Governor Venables in the beloved sitcom Porridge, starring Ronnie Barker, Barrington had a prolific career, appearing in numerous television shows, including Z Cars, The Avengers, Private Schulz, Adam Adamant Lives!, and Doctor Who, where he played the role of Sir Colin Thackeray in the story The Seeds of Doom. He also had a significant role in the 1975 English miniseries King Edward VII, portraying Sir Robert Peel.
Barrington's personal life was marked by a long-term marriage to actress Barbara New, which unfortunately ended with his passing on June 5, 1988, at the age of 63, due to a heart attack in London. He had struggled with lung disease for many years prior to his death. The actor was laid to rest in the East London Cemetery and Crematorium.
