Dr. Michael E. Mann is a highly distinguished and accomplished individual, currently serving as a Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State University. He holds joint appointments in the Department of Geosciences and the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI),and also serves as the director of the Penn State Earth System Science Center (ESSC).
Dr. Mann's educational background is impressive, with undergraduate degrees in Physics and Applied Math from the University of California at Berkeley, a Master's degree in Physics from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mann has made significant contributions to the field of climate science, using theoretical models and observational data to better understand Earth's climate system. His research has been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including NOAA's outstanding publication award in 2002, selection by Scientific American as one of the fifty leading visionaries in science and technology in 2002, and the award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, which he received as a contributing author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report.
Dr. Mann has also received the Hans Oeschger Medal of the European Geosciences Union in 2012, the National Conservation Achievement Award for science by the National Wildlife Federation in 2013, and was named Highly Cited Researcher by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in 2014. He has also been recognized as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In addition to his academic and research pursuits, Dr. Mann is a prolific author, having published two books: Dire Predictions: Understanding Climate Change and The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars: Dispatches from the Front Lines. His third book, The Madhouse Effect, co-authored with Washington Post editorial cartoonist Tom Toles, is set to be released this fall. Dr. Mann is also a co-founder of the award-winning science website RealClimate.org.
