Michael Praed was born in Berkeley, England, to Derrick and Kay Prince, but spent his early years in Iran due to his father's work as an accountant for a petroleum company. He was later sent back to England for a public school education, which he did not enjoy. Praed attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he adopted the surname "Praed" from the phone book as there was already a "Michael Prince" listed in Equity.
Praed's early career included roles in repertory theatre and London's West End, before he landed his breakout role as Robin Hood in the hit TV series "Robin of Sherwood". He then moved on to Broadway, starring in "The Three Musketeers" with Brent Spiner and Chuck Wagner, and later played Prince Michael of Moldavia in the prime-time soap "Dynasty".
After a stint on "Dynasty", Praed appeared in several films, including "Nightflyers", "Writer's Block", and "Son of Darkness: To Die For II", as well as working on music and recording in his own studio. He then returned to the stage, starring in productions such as "Carousel", "Aspects of Love", and "Riders".
Praed continued to work in film and television, starring in "Staggered", "Crown Prosecutor", and "Design for Living", as well as making appearances on episodic television and talk shows. He also began to narrate audiobooks, including works by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and Caroline Lawrence.
