Mike Brown, a native of Huntsville, Alabama, marked a significant milestone in his academic journey by graduating from Virgil I. Grissom High School in 1983. Following this accomplishment, he pursued higher education at Princeton University, where he earned his A.B. in physics in 1987. During his time at Princeton, he was an active member of the prestigious Princeton Tower Club.
After completing his undergraduate studies, Brown went on to further his education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in astronomy. His academic achievements were a testament to his dedication and passion for the field of astronomy.
Mike Brown is renowned for his groundbreaking surveys of distant objects orbiting the Sun. His team has made numerous significant discoveries, including the detection of Eris, which may be larger than Pluto and is one of the many dwarf planets in our Solar System. Other notable discoveries include 90377 Sedna, a planetoid believed to be the first inner Oort cloud object, and 90482 Orcus.
In addition to his scientific accomplishments, Brown's team has also made a name for themselves by informally naming Eris and its moon Dysnomia after the popular TV characters Xena and Gabrielle, respectively, from the hit series_Xena: Warrior Princess (TV Series 1995-2001)_.
