Biography

John Morton Downey, a renowned American singer and entertainer, achieved unparalleled popularity within the United States during the initial half of the 20th century, with his most remarkable success unfolding in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

He was fondly referred to as "The Irish Nightingale" owing to the extraordinary, rich, and high-pitched quality of his Irish tenor voice, which was so singularly characteristic that even an untrained ear could readily mistake it for a female voice, the timbre being so smooth and velvety that it defied categorization, a true marvel of the vocal arts.
