Biography

Paul Rieckhoff, a celebrated author, has made a profound impact on the literary world with his thought-provoking book, "Chasing Ghosts", a testament to his exceptional writing prowess.

Paul's academic background predates his military career, as he had the opportunity to earn his undergraduate degree in the field of political science from Amherst College.

This notable achievement was accomplished prior to his enlistment in the United States Army Reserves, an event that took place on September 15th, 1998.

Following his graduation, Paul began his military training, commencing with Basic Combat Training at Fort McClellan, Alabama.

After completing this initial phase of training, he went on to receive Advanced Individual Training at the same location.

Upon the successful completion of his training, Paul was assigned to the 812th Military Police Company, marking the beginning of his military service.

Paul's career trajectory took a significant turn in 1999 when he accepted a position with J.P. Morgan, a prestigious financial institution, and subsequently relocated to the New York Army National Guard. As he continued to ascend the ranks, he achieved the status of Specialist before opting to pursue a career in the officer corps. In June 2001, he embarked on a challenging journey by enrolling in Officer Candidate School (OCS),where he distinguished himself by graduating with honors and earning the esteemed title of Distinguished Military Graduate. Following his completion of OCS, Paul chose to specialize in Infantry, a field that requires exceptional skill, bravery, and tactical acumen. He was subsequently assigned to A Company, 1/105th INF, a light infantry unit renowned for its agility, versatility, and combat prowess.

Tragedy unfolded on the morning of September 11, 2001, as Paul found himself in his Manhattan apartment, a scene unfolding before his very eyes as the first plane deliberately struck the iconic World Trade Center, sending shockwaves of devastation throughout the city. Despite the chaos and uncertainty that surrounded him, Paul's sense of duty and responsibility prompted him to take swift action, as he donned his personal protective equipment and voluntarily joined the rescue efforts, his unit being swiftly activated that very evening to participate in the critical rescue and security operations that would follow.

Paul's military unit underwent activation in January 2003, with the specific purpose of being deployed to the war-torn country of Iraq, where he held the esteemed position of platoon leader for 3rd Platoon, B Company, 3/124th, an elite air assault infantry unit renowned for their bravery and tactical prowess.

Paul's journey took a somber turn upon his return to the world, as he was met with an overwhelming sense of disillusionment due to the glaring lack of support extended to returning veterans. This poignant realization served as a catalyst for Paul's determination to make a positive impact, and he responded by establishing and assuming the esteemed position of executive director for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA),a non-profit organization dedicated to the betterment of the lives of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families.

As the organization's mission unfolded, Paul's vision focused on tackling a myriad of critical issues that had been plaguing the veteran community, including the pervasive and debilitating effects of mental health injuries, the woefully inadequate healthcare system, the pressing need for improved healthcare services for female veterans, and the often convoluted and inadequate GI Bill educational benefits.

Through his tireless efforts, Paul has worked to amplify the voices of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, ensuring that their concerns are heard and addressed, and that they receive the support and recognition they so rightfully deserve. His unwavering dedication to this noble cause has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless veterans and their families, and has cemented his place as a champion of their rights and well-being.

Paul Rieckhoff's dedication to serving the nation's veterans extends far beyond his work with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). As a member of the New York State Council on Returning Veterans and their Families, he continues to demonstrate his unwavering commitment to supporting the brave men and women who have answered the call to serve their country, often putting their lives on the line to protect and defend the United States and its interests.
