Peter, a multi-talented individual, started his career in front of the camera, guest-starring in various television series such as Murphy Brown, Beverly Hills 90210, the Facts of Life, Dynasty, Too Close for Comfort, Booker, and Matlock. He also appeared in films like Spread, Movers and Shakers, GORP, and GREASE, for which he won the Drama-Logue Award as best actor.
After 15 years of unsuccessful pilots, SAG dues, and psychotherapy bills, Peter decided to shift his focus behind the camera. He and his wife, Fran Drescher, co-created, wrote, and executive produced the hit television series The Nanny for CBS, which became one of the most sought-after shows in television syndication.
Peter continued to work in television, co-writing The Nanny Animated Christmas Special, Oye to the World, and the Chatter Box. He also wrote the CBS pilot DIVA and executive produced, wrote, and created CCPD, a pilot for FOX with Dan Aykroyd, and co-created Charmed Lives for Embassy with Eve Brandstein.
When The Nanny ended, Peter moved back to his hometown, New York City, settling in Tribeca. He wrote the film Who I Did On My Summer Vacation, which was set to star Scarlett Johansson, but the project was ultimately shelved due to financial issues.
Instead of pursuing other projects, Peter returned to his television roots and created, produced, and wrote the reality series New York Nick for E!'s Style Network. However, he eventually returned to Hollywood and sold his loft to move to the Hills of Beverly.
Peter directed several episodes of the Joey Lawrence sitcom Run of the House and later co-executive produced the WB's What I Like About You. He also directed episodes of Hope and Faith, Rita Rocks, and the web series Tease.
TV Land aired a series co-created with Fran Drescher, Happily Divorced, based on their 18-year marriage, which ended when Peter revealed he was gay. Peter served as executive producer and writer. Simultaneously, he developed Queen of Harts, his first sitcom, for LOGO.
