Prince Phillip, born on June 10, 1921, as a Prince of Greece and Denmark, experienced a tumultuous early life following the deposition of his family. He spent his formative years in France and eventually attended boarding school in Gordonstoun, Scotland, a decision he would later replicate for his sons.
At the age of 18, Prince Phillip met his third cousin, Princess Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II. Theirs was a love story that spanned generations, with both being descended from Queen Victoria, King Christian IX of Denmark, and King George III. However, King George VI, Princess Elizabeth's father, was initially hesitant to approve their union.
Before their engagement, Prince Phillip renounced his hereditary royal title and adopted the surname of his uncle, Louis Mountbatten. The couple became engaged in 1947 and married on November 20th of that year. Prior to their wedding, Prince Phillip was created His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, but did not receive the title of Prince until 1957.
The couple's first child, Charles Phillip Arthur George, was born approximately a year after their wedding. They were followed by the birth of their daughter, Anne, in 1950, and then their sons, Andrew and Edward. Following the death of King George VI in 1952, Princess Elizabeth ascended to the throne as Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Phillip was forced to leave the Navy to take on his new role as a royal consort.
Throughout his life, Prince Phillip has been actively involved in various services and has undertaken numerous public engagements on behalf of his wife. In the late 1970s, he became a grandfather for the first time when his daughter, Anne, had two children, a boy named Peter and a girl named Zara.
Prince Phillip's eldest son, Charles, had two sons of his own, William in 1982 and Henry in 1984. His second son, Andrew, had two daughters, Beatrice in 1989 and Eugenie in 1991. His youngest son, Edward, was created the Earl of Wessex prior to his marriage to Sophie Rhys-Jones, with whom he has two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James Mountbatten-Windsor, Viscount Severn.
