Biography

Richard Whitmore was born on December 22, 1933, in England, and has had a multifaceted career spanning broadcasting, writing, and acting.

He received his education at the former Hitchin Grammar School, and unlike many of his peers, he did not attend university. Despite this, Whitmore went on to become a prominent figure in the BBC, serving as a newsreader in the 1970s and 1980s, and occasionally working as a reporter.

One of his most notable performances was in the "Nothing Like a Dame" musical number on the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show in 1977, where he appeared alongside other well-known presenters and newsreaders.

In addition to his work in broadcasting, Whitmore has also had a successful career on stage, appearing in several productions professionally. He even made a cameo appearance as a newscaster in the comedy film King Ralph in 1991.

Whitmore's contributions to the community have not gone unnoticed. In December 2011, he was elected President of Hitchin Band, a position he still holds today.

As an author, Whitmore has written several books, including a 2007 biography of Reginald Hine, a historian from Hitchin who tragically took his own life in 1949.

Whitmore has been married to his wife Wendy since April 26, 1957, and they have four daughters and nine grandchildren together. They reside in Hitchin, where Whitmore is highly regarded and respected.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the community, the studio at the Queen Mother Theatre in Hitchin has been named in his honour, a testament to his enduring legacy.
