Robert Alvarez is a renowned American animator, television director, and writer, whose illustrious career spans over five decades. He began his journey in the animation industry as an assistant animator on the iconic 1968 film Yellow Submarine, featuring The Beatles.
Throughout his career, Alvarez has worked on numerous animated television series, including Super Friends (1973),The Smurfs (1981),G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero - The M.A.S.S. Device (1983),A Pup Named Scooby-Doo (1988),Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron (1993),Dexter's Laboratory (1996),I Am Weasel (1997),The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy (2003),The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1988),and Regular Show (2010).
In addition to his work on television series, Alvarez has created and written two animated pilots, Pizza Boy in No Tip (1996) and Tumbleweed Tex in School Daze (1996),for Hanna-Barbera's cartoon shorts showcase What a Cartoon! (1995) in 1996.
Alvarez attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California from 1962 to 1966, and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in animation from the Chouinard Art Institute (now the California Institute of the Arts) in 1971.
Throughout his illustrious career, Alvarez has received numerous accolades, including six Primetime Emmy Awards, 20 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, and one Daytime Emmy Award nomination. His first nomination came in 1994 for directing The Town Santa Forgot (1993) in the category Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming One Hour or Less).
In the years that followed, Alvarez received multiple nominations for his work on various projects, including Beat Your Greens/Down 'n Dirty (1999),Moral Decay/Meet the Beat-Alls (2000),The Powerpuff Girls: 'Twas the Fight Before Christmas (2003),and Go Goo Go (2005).
In 2003, Alvarez won two Primetime Emmys for his work on the Genndy Tartakovsky series Star Wars: Clone Wars, and a third for Episode XXXVII - The Birth of Evil: Part I (2003)-Episode XXXVIII - The Birth of Evil: Part II (2003).
Alvarez continued to receive nominations and awards throughout the 2000s, including a Primetime Emmy for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends: Destination Imagination (2008) in 2009, and a Primetime Emmy for Eggscellent (2012) in 2012.
In 2007, Alvarez received a Daytime Emmy nomination for The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy (2003) in the category Outstanding Broadband Program - Children's.
