Robert Anthony Rodriguez was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, to Rebecca (Villegas),a nurse, and Cecilio G. Rodríguez, a salesman. His family is of Mexican descent. Growing up, Rodriguez was fascinated by films, particularly John Carpenter's Escape from New York (1981),which inspired him to make his own movies. He began making short films with his family's old Super-8 camera and went on to make a trilogy of short movies, "Austin Stories", which helped him get accepted into the film department at UT Austin.
After college, Rodriguez made his first feature-length film, El Mariachi (1992),which was a huge success and earned him a distribution deal with Columbia Pictures. He went on to make a string of successful films, including Desperado (1995),From Dusk Till Dawn (1996),and Spy Kids (2001).
