Saycon Sengbloh was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to an American mother and a Liberian father. This dynamic blend of cultural heritage has undoubtedly influenced her artistic pursuits. As a versatile actress and vocalist, she has made a name for herself in the contemporary theater scene, both on and off Broadway.
Saycon has had the privilege of being a part of several groundbreaking productions, including Rent, Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple, Disney's Aida, the revamped Hair, and Wicked, among others. Her impressive resume also boasts the Tony Award-winning musical Fela!, where she starred as the captivating Sandra Iszadore.
In addition to her stage work, Saycon has also made a significant impact in the music industry. She has lent her voice to the Grammy-nominated soundtracks of Fela!, Hair, and Motown the Musical, as well as provided backing vocals for the soundtrack of Julie Taymore's film Across the Universe.
This talented actress has also brought hip-hop to the Broadway stage in Tupac Shakur's production Holler If Ya Hear Me, where she played a muse and rapper to a new generation of theater enthusiasts. Her journey in the performing arts began at a young age, with performances in plays and musicals at Tri-Cities School for Visual and Performing Arts, and later at Agnes Scott College.
Saycon has had the opportunity to work with renowned directors such as Kenny Leon, Michael Greif, Charles Randolph-Wright, and Tyler Perry, and has appeared in films directed by female directors Julie Dash and Julie Taymore. Her impressive resume also includes numerous productions with the Freddie Hendrick's Youth Ensemble of Atlanta.
As a trailblazer in the industry, Saycon is proud to have made history as the first woman of African descent to play the role of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in Universal's hit musical Wicked. Furthermore, as an indie music artist and songwriter, she has released several songs available online and music videos, including "Be Here", "Warrior", and "Possible".
