Biography

Sergio Ciani, a stalwart figure in the world of Italian cinema, garnered widespread recognition and acclaim under his pseudonym "Alan Steel", a moniker that would come to be synonymous with his impressive physique and versatility as an actor. As the sword-and-sandal genre reached its peak of popularity during the early 1960s, Steel emerged as a leading figure, captivating audiences with his dashing portrayal of mythological demigods in a plethora of low-budget yet undeniably popular films.

Steve Reeves, the renowned American bodybuilder and actor, launched the film career of a then-unknown actor, who would later become a prominent figure in the industry. This actor, whose name is Steel, initially gained experience as a body double for Reeves, who had gained fame for his iconic role in the cult classic "Hercules" (1958).

Noted actor, Piero Stele, commonly referred to as Steve Reeves, embarked on a remarkable cinematic journey, swiftly ascending to stardom, with his iconic portrayal of the legendary demigod, Hercules, in a series of films, including "Sansone" (1961),where he shared the screen with fellow actor Brad Harris, who took on the title role.

As his career continued to flourish, Reeves went on to star in an array of Hercules films, showcasing his versatility and range as an actor. Some of his notable roles during this period include "Hercules Against Rome" (1964),"Hercules Against the Moon Men" (1964),"Hercules and the Black Pirate" (1964),and "Lost Treasure of the Incas" (1964).

Throughout his extensive filmography, Reeves consistently demonstrated his aptitude for bringing complex characters to life, captivating audiences worldwide with his iconic performances, and cementing his status as a beloved and enduring figure in the world of cinema.

Beyond his iconic portrayals of Hercules, Steel's impressive repertoire extended to include a diverse range of mythological characters, with notable appearances as Samson and Ursus, as well as forays into the realm of science fiction, where he seamlessly blended the fantastical with the futuristic.

As the cinematic phenomenon of sword-and-sandal movies gradually lost momentum, Steel adapted to a diverse range of film genres, venturing beyond the realm of action-packed epics. He embarked on a journey to explore alternative styles, including dramatic narratives, heart-pumping thrillers, spine-tingling horror films, gritty Westerns, and even lighthearted comedies.

Some of the notable films he appeared in during this period include "Sapevano solo uccidere" (1968),a gritty and stylish "spaghetti Western" co-starring the esteemed Kirk Morris and Gordon Mitchell. This film showcased Steel's versatility and ability to thrive in a variety of genres, from the action-packed to the dramatic.

Additionally, Steel also appeared in "Baby Love" (1979),an Italian comedy that further demonstrated his range and adaptability as a performer. This film, like many of his other roles, allowed Steel to showcase his impressive acting skills and connect with audiences in a more lighthearted and humorous way.

Australian filmmakers embarked upon a fascinating endeavour in 1993, revisiting one of Steel's earlier cinematic endeavours, the 1964 production "Samson and the Mighty Challenge", and breathed new life into the project by meticulously re-editing the original footage.

This revitalized feature, rechristened "Hercules Returns", was subsequently released to the public in 1993, boasting an impressive array of fresh elements, including original scenes, newly cast actors, and a revised soundtrack, thereby transforming the original film into a completely novel and captivating cinematic experience.
