Biography

Stephen Mallatratt, a renowned playwright and actor, passed away at the age of 57 due to leukemia. He gained fame by adapting Susan Hill's novel "The Woman In Black," which premiered in Scarborough as a Christmas production in 1987.

Mallatratt's success was marked by his ability to craft thrilling stories, often addressing the experiences of an actor. His work was influenced by his experience in the building trade and his training at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

Born in Mill Hill, London, Mallatratt came from a lower-middle-class background. He defied expectations by working briefly in the building trade and training as an actor. He was spotted by Alan Ayckbourn in Ipswich and went on to work as a rep actor.

Mallatratt's closest friend, actor David Neilson, described him as a talented actor who struggled with confidence. He was known for his excellent portrayal of English eccentrics and scoutmasters.

Mallatratt originated roles in Ayckbourn's modern masterpieces such as "Confusions," "Absent Friends," and "Bedroom Farce." He was also part of the Old Vic's collaborative operation in Bristol and later moved on to become a core member of the Coronation Street script-writing team.

Mallatratt's play "The Woman In Black" became a classic thriller for two actors and was translated into a dozen languages and produced in 40 countries. He also wrote for television, including the 2002 version of John Galsworthy's "The Forsyte Saga" and "Island At War" set on a fictional Channel Island.

Mallatratt is survived by his three successive wives, the actors Vanessa Mallatratt and Eileen O'Brien, and stage manager Emma London.
