Kloves embarked on a journey of self-discovery, opting to forgo monetary compensation in favor of an unpaid internship with a prominent Hollywood agent. It was during this period that he poured his heart and soul into crafting a screenplay, titled Swings, which ultimately garnered him recognition and acclaim within the industry.
This breakthrough led to a pivotal meeting, where Kloves showcased his vision for Racing with the Moon, a project that would eventually come to fruition in 1984. Despite receiving a moderate reception, The Fabulous Baker Boys laid the groundwork for Kloves' future endeavours.
Undeterred by the mixed response to his first foray into directing, Kloves continued to hone his craft, next taking on the challenge of writing and directing Flesh and Bone in 1993. Unfortunately, the film failed to resonate with audiences, resulting in a disappointing box office performance.
