Steve, born near Windsor, England, pursued a career in fine art, graduating in Fine Art from Leeds University. He then ventured into experimental theatre, joining the groundbreaking Impact Theatre Cooperative as an actor, appearing in thirteen original shows that toured the UK and Europe over six years. Following Impact's disbandment, Steve founded his own theatre company, creating and performing in a dozen new shows that toured globally, with retrospectives held at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
In recognition of his theatre work, Steve was selected for the BBC Drama Director's Course, training at the Television Centre in Shepherds Bush, London, to direct for the screen in various formats. He went on to direct for top-rated UK television shows, including "EastEnders", "Emmerdale", "Casualty", and "The Bill", before relocating to New York.
Steve's first US job was with Sidney Lumet on the TV courtroom series "100 Centre Street", starring Alan Arkin, due to his BBC training and experience in the style. He then worked on the "Law & Order" franchise, followed by projects for HBO, including "The Wire", "The Sopranos", "Rome", "Carnivale", and "Big Love". Steve directed the pilot of "The Tudors" in Dublin, starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and was nominated for a 2006 WGA Award for his writing and direction on "Deadwood".
Steve has produced and directed numerous pilots worldwide, including "Dracula" for NBC, shot entirely in Budapest. He directed the Screen Gems motion picture "Obsessed", starring Beyoncé Knowles and Idris Elba, which debuted at number one in the US box office.
In 2010, Steve won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for his work on the Season 4 finale of Showtime's "Dexter".
