Levenson was born and raised in Bethesda, Maryland, where he spent his formative years and developed a strong foundation for his future endeavors. He attended St. Andrew's Episcopal School, a prestigious institution that would lay the groundwork for his future academic pursuits. After completing his secondary education, Levenson went on to attend Brown University, a renowned institution of higher learning that would provide him with the ideal environment to explore his interests in theater and English.
Initially, Levenson's academic focus was on theater and English, but he eventually shifted his attention to playwriting, a decision that would ultimately lead him to create some of his most notable works. His dedication to his craft paid off when he wrote the book for the musical "Dear Evan Hansen," which premiered at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC in 2015 and later opened on Broadway in December 2016.
The success of "Dear Evan Hansen" was immense, earning Levenson the 2016 Obie Award for Musical Theatre and the 2017 Tony Award for Best Book. This recognition cemented his status as a talented and innovative playwright, and his work would go on to be celebrated and recognized throughout the industry.
In addition to his work on "Dear Evan Hansen," Levenson has also written "The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin," a play that premiered Off-Broadway in June 2013. Produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company at the Laura Pels Theatre, the play was part of the company's New Play Initiative and earned Levenson the 2014 Outer Critics Circle Award and the John Gassner Award.
Levenson's other notable work includes "If I Forget," a play that opened Off-Broadway at the Laura Pels Theatre in February 2017 and closed in April of the same year. The play was nominated for four 2017 Drama Desk Awards, further solidifying Levenson's reputation as a talented and accomplished playwright.
In his personal life, Levenson is married to Whitney May, an art historian and designer. The couple has a daughter born in 2015, and they reside together in New York City.
