Steve is a multifaceted creative professional with a strong background in film and screenwriting. He has earned a reputation as a talented director, producer, actor, and writer, with a passion for storytelling that spans multiple formats and genres.
As a graduate of Australia's top film schools, including the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA),Steve has honed his skills in the art of filmmaking. He has also furthered his education by earning a research PhD in screenwriting from Macquarie University, solidifying his expertise in the field.
Steve's debut feature film as director, Blackrock, premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival and received widespread critical acclaim. The film was nominated for five Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards, including Best Film, and won several awards from the Australian Writers' Guild, including Best Screenplay Adaptation and Best Script in any category.
In addition to his work in feature films, Steve has also made a significant impact in the world of television. He co-wrote the mini-series A Difficult Woman with Nicholas Hammond for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC),which won the Silver World Medal for best mini-series at the New York Festivals.
Throughout his career, Steve has demonstrated his versatility and range as a writer, having written for both one-hour and half-hour television shows. He has also had several feature film screenplays optioned and has worked as a development executive, script assessor, and consultant for various organizations, including the New South Wales Film and Television Office (NSWFTO),the Australian Film Commission (AFC),and Screen Australia.
Steve has also shared his expertise as a lecturer in screenwriting at several institutions, including AFTRS, Macquarie University, and Tisch NYU Asia. His passion for teaching and mentoring has helped shape the next generation of screenwriters and filmmakers.
Most recently, Steve wrote and directed the film Standing Up For Sunny, which premiered at the Sydney Film Festival and won the 2020 Australian Academy of Cinema & Television (AACTA) Award for Best Indie Film. The film stars RJ Mitte, Radha Mitchell, and Sam Reid, and is a testament to Steve's continued growth and success as a filmmaker.
