Thor Heyerdahl's father, a prominent patriarch, oversaw a successful brewing enterprise, providing a stable foundation for the young Thor's future endeavors. After completing his academic studies, Heyerdahl pursued a degree in zoology at the University of Oslo in 1933. Following the successful completion of his studies, he wed Liv Coucheron Torp in 1934, and the newlywed couple embarked on an extended sojourn to the enchanting Marquesas Islands in Polynesia, a journey that would prove to be a transformative experience for both of them. The following year, they returned to Norway, where they welcomed their firstborn son, Thor, in September, and later, their second son, Björn, arrived to complete their family.
