Tony Cavanaugh's biography:
Tony Cavanaugh, the son of a car dealer and grandson of a decorated American WW2 hero, began his career in the film and TV industry at the age of 15 as an assistant runner. He worked on various productions, including Homicide, Matlock Police, and Division Four, before joining Crawford Productions full-time after graduating from Flinders University.
Tony worked on the crew of The Sullivans for three years, primarily as a clapper loader and focus puller, before moving into the script department, where he edited and wrote. He later became a story editor and showrunner, co-creating The Flying Doctors and working on the ill-fated Cluedo series.
As a freelancer, Tony worked as an assessor for various film funding bodies and production companies, and was a film reviewer for Cinema Papers. He was also a lecturer/teacher of narrative storytelling.
Tony's notable works include his work as a story and script editor on Once Were Warriors, and his co-writing and co-producing of the movie Father, starring Max von Sydow. He also wrote for legends Robert Vaughn and Van Johnston, and created the successful TV series Medivac and The Day of the Roses.
In 2004, Tony and his partner Simone North wrote and produced the drama Through My Eyes, an award-winning definitive history of the Azaria Chamberlain case. In 2008, they produced the movie I Am You, starring Guy Pearce, Sam Neill, and Miranda Otto.
Tony took a hiatus from the industry to write crime novels, which were published by Hachette Australia, Sonatine, Points, and Egmont. He returned to the industry, focusing on Asia and its approaches to storytelling, and joined ABS Motion Pictures, a production company in Bangkok.
In 2018, Tony formed Armarna Films with Louise Lee-Mei and joined with Beyond to form another joint venture, Beyond Armarna. He now works as an Executive Producer, developing and producing various forms of visual entertainment for both niche and mass audiences.
