Unnikrishnan Mukundan Nair, better known as Unni Mukundan in the film fraternity, grew up in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and attended Pragati Higher Secondary School and Prajyoti Niketan College in Thrissur, where he completed his graduation in English Literature and Journalism.
Before pursuing a career in acting, Mukundan worked in the BPO industry, but he gave up his well-paying job to fulfill his dream of becoming an actor.
Mukundan made his film debut with Seedan (2011),a romantic fantasy drama, and then appeared in Bombay March 12 (2011),a film based on the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.
His debut performance earned him several awards, including the Best Debutant Actor Award at the South Indian International Movie Awards 2011, the Best Newcomer of the Year Award at the Jaihind TV Film Awards 2011, and the Best New Face of the Year Award at the Asianet Film Awards 2012.

Mukundan has also ventured into film production, launching his company Unni Mukundan Films in 2020, which has produced films like Meppadiyan (2022) and Shefeekkinte Santhosham (2022).
He has received several awards and nominations for his performances, including the Pravasi Express Award for the Youth Icon category in 2013 and the Anand TV Award for Youth Icon in 2017.
