Biography

Vittorio Rietti, a renowned figure in the realm of human endeavors, has led a life that has been marked by remarkable achievements and a profound impact on the world around him.

Vittorio Rietti, a renowned figure in the world of acting, was born in the picturesque city of Ferrara, Italy in the year 1888, marking the beginning of a life that would be filled with drama, passion, and dedication to his craft. He was the 11th of 12 siblings born to Samuele and Lucia Rietti, a family that would play a significant role in shaping his early years and influencing his future endeavors.

As fate would have it, Rietti's family relocated to Bologna when he was just 8 years old, a move that would have a profound impact on his life. The city, steeped in history and culture, would provide him with a unique backdrop against which he would hone his skills and develop his passion for acting.

Little did Rietti know, his life was about to take a dramatic turn when, at the tender age of 13, he was discovered by the illustrious Italian tragedian actor Tommaso Salvini. Salvini, a master of his craft, recognized the potential in the young Rietti and encouraged him to pursue a career in acting. This chance encounter would set the stage for Rietti's rise to fame, as he embarked on a journey that would take him to the heights of success and leave an indelible mark on the world of theatre.

Rietti's professional journey commenced with a theatrical debut, taking on the iconic role of Shakespeare in the city of Bologna, where he garnered recognition at a remarkably young age of 19 by being entrusted with the esteemed position of juvenile lead alongside the illustrious Eleonora Duse in her esteemed theatrical company.

Despite his burgeoning talent on stage, Rietti's parents harbored a different vision for his future, with a strong desire for him to pursue a career in music, specifically as a violinist. Consequently, he enrolled in the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he had the unique opportunity to study under the guidance of instructors, amidst an environment that fostered artistic growth and development.

Interestingly, Rietti's cousin, Vittorio Rieti, who would later go on to achieve great success as a Broadway composer, was also a student at the Royal Conservatory, providing Rietti with a sense of camaraderie and shared experience as they navigated the complexities of their respective musical journeys.

Following the cessation of hostilities in World War I, Rietti rekindled his stage presence and established the Drama Players Theater, a venture he would oversee for an impressive four decades, presenting a diverse array of popular Italian plays and, with a keen eye for linguistic nuance, personally translating and adapting them into the English language.

In addition to his directorial and producing duties, Rietti also shared his extensive knowledge of the craft with a new generation of thespians, taking on the role of acting instructor and mentor to a select group of talented individuals, including the renowned actress Ida Lupino, the accomplished performer June Duprez, and his own son, Bobby Rietti.

Robert Rietty, the son of Rietti, embarked on a remarkable career as a child actor, garnering widespread popularity, and later transitioned into a successful acting career in his own right. In contrast, Ronald Rietti, Rietti's other son, chose a different path, leveraging his talents to become a skilled film director and producer.

Rietti's impressive career in the film industry spanned over three decades, commencing with his first motion picture in 1933 and culminating with a memorable cameo appearance in the 1963 film Come Fly with Me. During this period, he created an astonishing 36 films, each one a testament to his dedication and artistry.

Beyond his work in film, Rietti also demonstrated his versatility by broadcasting in 43 radio plays, further showcasing his range and adaptability as a performer.

The dawn of television marked a significant turning point in the career of the talented Rietti, as he secured his first major triumph in the 1951 television production of "To Live in Peace". In this iconic production, Rietti took on the lead role of the endearing priest Don Bonaparte, a character that would forever be etched in the minds of audiences.

The production's widespread acclaim was met with a plethora of accolades, including the prestigious critic's Oscar for best television actor of 1951, a testament to Rietti's remarkable talent and dedication to his craft.

As a result of the production's immense popularity, "To Live in Peace" was rebroadcast on multiple occasions, with the television production being aired again in 1952, 1956, and 1957, respectively. Furthermore, the production's enduring appeal extended beyond the small screen, as it was also adapted for radio in 1953 and 1956, ensuring that Rietti's remarkable performance continued to captivate audiences across various mediums.

Rietti's television career continued to flourish with a string of memorable performances, showcasing his remarkable range and versatility as an actor. Notably, he lent his talents to the translation and adaptation of two Italian plays, "The Wanderer" and "Against The Stream", which were subsequently brought to life on the small screen. Moreover, Rietti made a lasting impression on American television audiences by making guest appearances in a variety of popular shows, including the iconic "The Jack Benny Program" and the charming "Harry's Girls".

On the twenty-third day of July, nineteen hundred and fifty-nine, the Italian Government formally knighted Rietti, bestowing upon him the esteemed title of Cavaliere, in recognition of his profound contributions to the Italian entertainment industry.

This remarkable individual, despite being confronted with a grave prognosis by his medical professionals, who informed him that he had only six months to live due to a severe heart condition at the tender age of thirty-five, defied the odds and continued to thrive for an additional forty years.

Rietti's remarkable life story, marked by his resilience and determination, would later be adapted into a BBC radio play, titled Papa Rietti, serving as a testament to his enduring legacy.

Tragically, Rietti's remarkable journey came to an abrupt halt on December 3, nineteen hundred and sixty-three, when he succumbed to a fatal heart attack, leaving behind a lasting impact on the world of entertainment and beyond.
