Walter S. Tevis's illustrious literary career began to take shape in 1957, when his science-fiction short story, "The Ifth Of Oofth", was published in the prestigious magazine "Galaxy Science Fiction". This marked the start of a prolific writing period, during which Tevis would go on to author his first two novels.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Tevis's writing career came to an abrupt halt. He put his pen down and redirected his energies towards academia, taking on the role of Professor of English at Ohio University. This significant career shift would last for nearly two decades, from the late 1950s to 1978.
But the creative spark within Tevis was not extinguished, and he eventually returned to his writing roots. In 1978, he resumed his literary pursuits, rekindling the passion that had driven him to publish his work in the first place. This renewed focus on writing would see Tevis go on to craft even more remarkable stories, solidifying his reputation as a master of science-fiction and a talented wordsmith.
