In the realm of screenwriting, Scheffer's first screenplay, "In The Gloaming," was produced by HBO NYC in 1997, marking the beginning of a successful career in the television industry. He subsequently relocated to Pasadena, where he joined forces with his husband, Mark V. Olsen, to co-write and produce several projects.
One of their most notable collaborations is the critically acclaimed HBO drama "Big Love," which premiered in 2002 and ran for five seasons. The duo's subsequent creation, "Getting On," debuted in 2013 and garnered widespread critical acclaim.
Throughout his career, Scheffer has shared his expertise with aspiring artists, serving as a mentor and educator at various institutions, including the Ensemble Studio Theatre Institute, Actors' Studio, USC School of Cinematic Arts, UCLA, City University of New York, Lewis & Clark College, School of Visual Arts, Provincetown Film Festival, Dances with Films, and HH&S.
