Yorgos Lanthimos, a renowned Greek film director, was born in the vibrant city of Athens, Greece. He pursued his passion for filmmaking by studying directing for Film and Television at the prestigious Stavrakos Film School in his hometown.
Before venturing into feature films, Lanthimos collaborated with renowned Greek choreographers to create captivating dance videos. He also explored his creative range by directing TV commercials, music videos, short films, and theater plays.
Lanthimos's feature film debut, Kinetta, garnered critical acclaim at the Toronto and Berlin film festivals. His subsequent feature, Dogtooth, won the coveted "Un Certain Regard prize" at the 2009 Cannes film festival, followed by a slew of awards at festivals worldwide. This remarkable achievement earned Dogtooth a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards (Oscars) in 2011.
The director's subsequent projects, Alps and The Lobster, solidified his reputation as a master of his craft. Alps won the "Osella for best screenplay" at the 2011 Venice film festival and Best Film at the Sydney film festival in 2012. The Lobster, presented in Competition at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and won Best Screenplay and Best Costume Design at the European Film Awards in 2015.
Lanthimos's fifth project, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, premiered in Competition at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Screenplay. His latest film, The Favorite, is a historical drama that delves into the fascinating life of British Queen Anne.
