Seventeen-year-old Rhoda Williams celebrates her acceptance to MIT, but her joy is short-lived as she crashes her car into a composer's family, killing his pregnant wife and baby son. Rhoda spends four years in prison, then moves back in with her parents and becomes a high school janitor. She struggles with guilt and tries to commit suicide, but survives. Rhoda enters a contest to win a trip to Earth 2, a newly discovered planet similar to Earth. Meanwhile, scientists discover that Earth 2 is a mirror of Earth, but the synchronicity between the two planets' inhabitants is disrupted. Rhoda meets the composer, John Burroughs, and lies to him, saying she's offering him a free cleaning service. As they fall in love, Rhoda must decide whether to take the trip to Earth 2 or confess the truth to John, threatening to destroy their relationship.
