Two aspiring dancers, Johnny Brett and King Shaw, struggle to make it big in New York. A producer's mistaken phone call leads to a mix-up, and Johnny is cast in a Broadway show instead of King. As Johnny falls for the lead actress, Clare, she also begins to develop feelings for him. However, just as it seems like Johnny's shot at stardom has passed him by, King's drunken performance on opening night forces someone else to take his place. The film features numerous dance routines and Cole Porter songs, including the iconic "Begin the Beguine".
