In 1896 Montmartre, a nightclub owner, Simone, defies the law by performing the forbidden Can-Can dance daily. Her employees use their charms to distract authorities, who often attend the shows. However, a young and ambitious judge, Philippe Forrestier, vows to put an end to the lawlessness. Simone must navigate her relationships with Philippe and her boyfriend, Francois, as she tries to outwit the judge and maintain her nightclub's reputation.
