Up-and-coming corporate attorney Robert Bilott is visited by a farmer who accuses DuPont of poisoning his cows through a nearby landfill. Bilott's initial hesitation to take on the case changes when he sees the shocking evidence of cattle poisoning firsthand. He files a lawsuit, gains access to confidential company files, and uncovers a scandal that endangers the health of many people.
